We call 'comedia Gabrielliana' that variant of Commedia dell'Arte invented and developed by the actor Giovanni Gabrielli between the late 16th and early 17th century. The key feature of the Gabrielliana is the performer, only one. One artist alone plays the entire comedy and all characters, using masks and accessories. The particular technique and the poetics of the Commedia give to the actor all expressive tools to resolve within the scene the numerous interpretations, the different gestures, the complexity of the characters.
In UN FELICE NAUFRAGIO, the actress Merve Engin develops with artistic gabrielliano scenic style the story of the shipwreck of the young Lelio, in love with the beautiful Flaminia, and loved by her. He is shipwrecked on an island where the fascinating Nymph Zampilla (Gushes), who is in love with him, restrains him; and fearsome Satyr Puzzone guards him. But Flaminia, who leaves to search for Lelio, finds and liberates him.
Many other characters move in this central situation: the servant Pulcinella, the Captain, the old Pantalone ... The stage of the Gabrielliana, with extreme simplicity, is designed to contain, host and put in motion the relationships of all the characters. We can affirm that the main character is the artist, one and multiple, able to embody all those lives and those events, with his voice, his gestures, and his scenic poetry.
Merve Engin, who partners with a crowd of masks, is the absolute artist of this UN FELICE NAUFRAGIO.
Have fun!
